The Culture Code

Making psychological safety measurable, manageable, and reportable through co-created standards.

The Psychological Safety Institute is spearheading workplace culture standards. The Culture Code will help organizations benchmark their current working environment, understand current strengths and risks, and focus on driving real change.

A shared language for culture

In collaboration with industry leaders, we’re codifying what a psychologically safe culture looks like, covering five critical areas:

  1. Self-awareness and personal responsibility at the individual level
  2. One-to-one communication and constructive dialogue
  3. Team-level behaviours and routines that fuel collaboration
  4. Ongoing learning and adaptation
  5. Practices that drive innovation

This will become your essential blueprint for working better together – a shared language that aligns leaders, HR, and operations around the same definitions and goals.

Alongside developing the Culture Code, we’re building a psychological safety benchmarking tool in collaboration with the University of Cambridge; we’re committed to bringing rigour to workplace culture in everything we do.

Sector focus:

Manufacturing, pharma, financial services

The standards outlined in the Culture Code will have universal relevance. We’re especially interested in what they mean for manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and financial services businesses because of the role of quality and risk in these sectors. Right now, our focus is manufacturing.

Psychological safety standards in manufacturing

Physical safety is tightly-regulated in manufacturing, but psychological safety isn’t. Toxic behavior, team dysfunction, and rework often get accepted as inevitable facts of life. Problems with communication and collaboration become ingrained. We’re here to lead the change.

Help shape standards that work on the factory floor

We’re surveying manufacturing industry insiders to understand the sector’s strengths and struggles, and we’ll be inviting a select group of manufacturing leaders to a roundtable event, where we’ll stress-test the standards before making them official.
